BERLIN - LICHTERFELDE

Located in the heart of Berlin's historic and green district of Lichterfelde-West, an existing apartment building was comprehensively renovated and expanded, thus raising it to a new architectural standard. The goal of the project was to integrate modern living standards and energy efficiency requirements while preserving the existing building structure. As part of the project, the old gable roof was replaced with a hipped mansard roof with an integrated loggia and generous skylights. This created a new, high-quality attic area with generous natural light and views of the greenery. The simple facade of the existing building was restructured with finely profiled cornices and shadow gaps. The building was expanded to include two modern, generously glazed bay windows on the ground floor, which optimally supply the living spaces with natural light and simultaneously create a smooth transition between indoor and outdoor space. They also form the basis for the balconies above, which create a new quality of stay for the residents on the upper floor. Another focus was on optimizing the building's energy efficiency. The newly constructed attic meets the most modern requirements for an insulated building shell. Mechanical ventilation, including air conditioning and underfloor heating, provides additional living comfort. The installation of a heat pump and the use of triple-glazed aluminum windows significantly improved the energy efficiency of the lower floors as well. Bronze-anodized shutters provide external sun protection and lend the building a striking and elegant architectural character. The project thus combines the preservation of valuable building fabric with targeted, high-quality modernization. Through its architecturally sensitive approach to the existing structure, it represents sustainable construction and thus creates a new quality for high-quality and sustainable uses.
